Adult Development

Adults face many developmental challenges over the lifespan ranging from early adult experiences to old age to death and dying. This workshop identifies the major developmental tasks facing adults from ages 20-90+ and examines core issues that arise for many people, including changing roles and identifies, work management, family/household management, physical and mental health, etc.

Stress Management

As individuals living in an increasingly “have enough, be enough, do enough society”, it is easy to become overwhelmed with the demands of our daily lives. Where is the line between meeting expectations and burning ourselves out? Discussion will involve how we become so overscheduled, ways to let go of unhealthy thought patterns and behaviors that lead to this stress and practical skills that can lighten the load of our lives.

Impact of Trauma on the Mind and Body

Trauma used to be defined as an abnormal experience that was not common to many people. Unfortunately in today’s world, more and more people are having to confront traumatic experiences, from car accidents to interpersonal violence to cultural violence. This presentation defines trauma, explores how trauma effects the mind, body, and spirit), how people cope with trauma, and how people survive and grow through their experiences.

Coping with Mental Illness

Many people experience mental health issues in their lives. This presentation provides an overview to the major forms of mental illness, examines the continuum of mental health/illness, and discusses strategies for helping those who deal with mental health issues.

Caregiving for those with Mental Illness

Since so many individuals living with mental illness are able to remain in their homes and communities, there are a large number of people who provide care to this population. This presentation provides an overview to the major forms of mental illness, examines the continuum of mental health/illness, and discusses strategies for helping others cope with their illness. The workshop also focuses on how caregivers can take care of themselves as they care for others.

Burnout and Vicarious Trauma

Tired? Overwhelmed with caregiving? Feeling angry and disheartened with work you used to love doing? It may be burnout or vicarious trauma. Many people in the caregiving fields experience disillusionment, burnout, or even secondary trauma from their experiences working with others. Learn how these issues affect us personally and professionally, share your stories, and find strength and strategies for overcoming this fatigue!

Talking Diversity, Racism, Culture, and Justice

Many workshops on diversity focus only on celebrating the unique qualities we each have. Although a focus on “diversity” is often a starting-point for cultural responsiveness in organizations, people often need the knowledge and permission to discuss issues of race, culture, gender, religion, disability, and sexual orientation that go beyond “celebrating” our differences. Prevention Educators recognizes that many adults are uncomfortable discussing these issues amongst themselves, their staff, and their clients. Yet these conversations are imperative, as our differences inform who we are and how we work together. This workshop provides adults with engaging ideas about how to discuss challenging issues such as privilege, oppression, and inclusive attitudes and behaviors with the people they work and live with.

Child Abuse & Neglect

This workshop provides an overview of child abuse and neglect by defining the different forms of abuse/maltreatment, examining warning signs of abuse and neglect (including behavioral indicators) and determining what to do if you suspect a child is being abused or neglected. PE trainers can also explore your agency’s legal obligations to ensure children’s safety.

Sexual Misconduct

Prevention Educators has worked with groups in the aftermath of sexual misconduct. We can provide several levels of support to community organizations following the knowledge of this crime including psychoeducational workshops that explore gender and power dynamics in your organization and allow for processing of the experience. Prevention Educators also provides training on this topic, including warning signs and strategizing how to minimize your agency’s risk. PE trainers will work with your agency to develop policies related to sexual misconduct, assault, and abuse as well.

This presentation will examine that question. Through interactive exercises and discussion, participants will learn methods for helping themselves or those they care about begin to move beyond the trauma and seek the support they need to thrive.

Survivor Stories

Prevention Educators is proud to partner with survivors who courageously share their stories about date rape and childhood sexual abuse. When survivors speak, people listen. Their personal accounts create an awareness that is hard to forget and often motivates others to work for change. PE trainers accompany our survivor speakers to provide educational information and support.

The program also examines the legal and social definitions of domestic violence, the role of religious communities in intervening in abuse, and strategies for assisting both survivors and perpetrators who seek support.

Domestic Violence in the Workplace

Employers have both ethical and economic reasons to care about employees who are experiencing violence in their personal relationships. Employees who are being abused at home may seek assistance from their coworkers, supervisors, and friends. Business owners also absorb a large portion of the health care costs related to domestic violence, which total over $4 billion dollars a year in the United States. This workshop explores the intersection of domestic violence and the workplace and helps businesses create solutions to addressing domestic violence.

Surviving to Thriving: The Aftermath of Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence

The FBI reports that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 12 men will experience sexual assault in their lifetimes. An even greater number of people experience intimate partner violence.
