Parent Workshops

Prevention Educators is WNY’s only consulting firm dedicated to violence prevention. We provide workshops to parent groups through your school or community organization. Safe Schools: Parent Partnerships

This workshop focuses on interpersonal violence and safety issues in schools today. We will examine the various ways parents can become involved in preventing school violence, from communicating with their children to organizing activities in their communities.

Talking to Your Kids About Sexual Harassment

This presentation provides both the legal and behavioral definitions of sexual harassment. We will discuss strategies for preventing sexual harassment, as well as communication skills for talking to your kids about sexual harassment. Finally, we will explore resources and support systems if your child has been a victim of sexual harassment.

Talking to Your Kids About Bullying

This workshop explains the differences between bullying and teasing, focuses on characteristics of bullies and their victims, discusses communication strategies for talking to your kids about bullies, and methods for dealing with bullies if your child is a victim. We will also examine ways to partner with your child’s school to implement an effective anti-bullying campaign.

Talking To Your Kids About Healthy and Unhealthy Relationships

One in five youth will experience violence in their dating relationships. And unfortunately, many young people do not feel capable of turning to their parents for support when faced with this reality. This presentation will help parents differentiate characteristics of healthy and unhealthy relationships, identify the warning signs of unhealthy relationships, explore risk factors for youth who become involved in violent relationships, and discuss communication skills for talking with kids about their relationships.

Talking to Your Kids About Child Abuse & Neglect

This workshop provides an overview for parents of child abuse and neglect by defining the different forms of maltreatment, examining warning signs of abuse and neglect (including behavioral indicators,) explores methods for communicating with children about abuse at an age-appropriate level, and provides resources for coping with abuse if your child is victimized.

Talking to Your Kids About Sexual Abuse

Child abuse is every parent’s nightmare, and the myths about perpetrators and victims often keep us from facing the reality. Estimates indicate that up to 80% of teen survivors of rape knew their attacker before the incident occurred. This presentation provides an overview of myths and facts about acquaintance rape, the truth about drug-facilitated rape, and ways to minimize your teen’s risk.

Adolescent gangs are not just an inner-city phenomenon. This presentation will explore the three main reasons teens join street gangs. It will also break down gang signals and codes and explore strategies for parental intervention.

This workshop deciphers the dangers of sexual predators online, explores the methods they use to disguise their identities and intents, and focuses on how to respond when your child may have unknowingly made contact with a pedophile.

Today’s parents are under enormous amounts of stress and all too often we may take it out on our kids. This presentation will explore methods for identifying and minimizing parental stress. We will also discuss coping strategies, anger management, and self-care.
