Youth Programs
Stop It! A Bullying WorkshopThis presentation on bullying distinguishes for youth the difference between bullying and teasing. It focuses on characteristics of both bullies and youth who are victimized by bullies, discusses the harm that bullies create, and enlists youth to develop strategies for responding to bullying in their school, neighborhood, or community group. Boundaries with AdultsPrevention Educators has worked with schools in the aftermath of educator sexual misconduct and other inappropriate teacher behavior. This workshop for youth explores the relationship between them and the adults in their lives who are in positions of power, such as their teachers. PE trainers will explore dynamics related to gender and power in the classroom. Appropriate and inappropriate boundaries and relationships with adults are discussed. Trainers will also identify the warning signs of inappropriate relationships with adults and identify resources for youth seeking support when they or someone they know is at risk of being harmed by a teacher or other adult. Talking About DiversityEnsuring safe environments must include the celebration of all children’s unique qualities. However, youth often lack the knowledge and permission to discuss issues of diversity around race, culture, gender, religion or sexual orientation. This workshop provides your youth group with engaging activities to discuss challenging issues such as privilege, oppression, and inclusive attitudes and behaviors. Feeling Better About Me: Self-EsteemMany children and teens have low self-esteem, which greatly impacts their behavior, academic, and/or social skills. This workshop presents a comprehensive definition of self-esteem and examines the impact of self-concept on a youth’s abilities through discussion and interactive exercises. Feeling Better About Me: Body ImageThis workshop focuses on building positive body image among youth. Young women and men receive enormous pressure to conform to stereotypical body types and their self-esteem can be greatly influenced by their feelings about their body. Through discussion and exercises, PE trainers examine media myths about body image, debunk the idea of the “perfect” woman or man, and also explore gender stereotypes as they relate to body images. Feeling Better About Me: DepressionSuicide rates among youth are three times higher than the national average for other age groups. This workshop addresses depression among youth, focusing on warning signs, risk factors, and healthy ways to cope when dealing with depression. Strategies for intervention with suicidal youth are also addressed. Exploring Media ViolenceUsing examples from popular culture, this workshop explores the effects of violence in the media on youth. Participants will learn to critically analyze media such as popular music, movies, literature, etc. and will also examine media alternatives to violent material. Safe SurfingThis is one of our most requested youth programs! Sexual predators are using the chat rooms and other Internet sites, such as MySpace to access and exploit youth. This presentation helps youth identify behaviors that can place them at risk for violence through the Internet, and teaches them skills and strategies for resisting Internet harassment. Healthy and Unhealthy RelationshipsThis interactive presentation focuses on identifying the characteristics of both healthy and unhealthy relationships, fun and safe things to do on a date, and also warning signs of dating violence. PE trainers then engage youth through role-playing to explore how they can effectively help friends who may be involved in an unhealthy relationship. Talking About Sexual HarassmentThis workshop provides youth with an understanding of the definitions of both hostile environment and quid pro quo harassment, the behaviors that encompass the various forms of sexual harassment, and strategies for preventing sexual harassment. We also teach youth how to safely deal with sexual harassment if they experience it from either adults or peers. Talking About RapeRape is an unfortunate reality for many young people that adults often shy away from talking about, which leaves young people feeling confused and alone when it occurs. Prevention Educators offers three workshops focusing on the experience of sexual assault for youth. Our trainers have years of experience handling the sensitive nature of these workshops and are capable of handling disclosures; in addition to providing immediate and appropriate referrals and support. Workshop I: Myths and FactsThis workshop introduces youth to the myths and facts about both victims and perpetrators of rape, through open and honest discussion and activities. Legal definitions of rape and an overview of the effects on young victims are also explored. Youth are also engaged to create action planning related to sexual assault prevention in their schools and communities. Workshop II: Supporting SurvivorsThis workshop follows “Myths and Facts” and provides students with information about the impact of rape on young survivors, their friends and family. Through role-playing and interactive discussions, youth learn how to help those they care about as they struggle to cope with the aftermath of assault. Workshop III: Rape DrugsDrug-facilitated rapes are prevalent among youth survivors and many of these drugs are available on school campuses and in local communities. Our presentation addresses the use of drugs to facilitate sexual assault, focusing on drugs such as Rohypnol (Roofies), Ketamine (Special-K), Ecstasy (X), and GHB (Liquid Gold); as well as preventive measures and local resources for support. Talking About Child AbuseThis sensitive workshop provides youth with definitions of the different forms of child abuse, myths and facts about child abuse, common feelings youth have if they are being abused, and strategies for speaking out about abuse. Trainers also address support systems, referrals and resources for youth in the local area. Talking About Child Sexual AbuseThis workshop provides youth with a more in-depth understanding of the experience of children and teens who are sexually abused. Through interactive exercises, our trainers explore with students the meaning of sexual abuse in our culture, warning signs of sexual abuse, common responses youth may have to sexual abuse (including both behavioral and emotional responses), and skills for coping with sexual abuse if it is happening to themselves or someone they care about. HIV/AIDS Among AdolescentsHigh school students are at increased risk for contracting HIV. A new study by the Centers for Disease Controls revealed that 1 in 4 teens have an STD. Nine out of ten people with the HIV virus are unaware that they have it. This workshop provides teen audiences with information about HIV/AIDS; what it is, how it is acquired, how to get tested, and how to prevent it. We will also discuss the global impact of AIDS and how students can become involved in activist efforts both locally and globally. Talking About School SafetyThis workshop examines the different forms of school violence and assists youth to be pro-active in dealing with school violence. Through role-playing and interactive exercises, youth learn how to make responsible decisions when confronted with violence in their school. Stress ManagementToday’s children and teens live in an increasingly “have enough, be enough, do enough society.” It is easy for them to become overwhelmed with the demands of their daily lives and the expectations of their parents and teachers. Where is the line between meeting expectations and burning out? Discussion in this workshop will involve how youth become so overscheduled, ways to let go of unhealthy thought patterns and behaviors that lead to this stress, and practical skills that can lighten the load of our lives. Strategies for Youth LeadershipOur trainers can provide your youth group or peer leadership program with intense training on youth leadership skill-building; focusing on peer support and counseling, communication skills, coalition building, and youth activism. These topics can be explored individually, in workshop groupings, or for evening or weekend retreats. Together we can make a difference! |
